With the V8’s revving up for action in the Sucrogen Townsville 400, the Blood Service finds itself headed into the main straight at the most challenging time of the year. During the winter months, the Blood Service sees blood donation rates drop significantly due to many regular donors having colds and flu.

The need for blood is always in top gear and currently we don’t have enough. Right now there are more people who need blood for cancer treatments and other life-threatening conditions, than there are blood donors.

Members of Walkinshaw Racing, supported by drivers Garth Tander, Will Davison, Fabian Coulthard and Andrew Thompson will donate blood while the on-track action revs up in North Queensland.

Toll Holden Racing Team V8 Supercar driver Garth Tander said "Can you give blood? Your blood has the power to save up to three lives, and you’ll feel like a winner afterwards just like I do when I am first over the line".

"Please find a spare hour and make an appointment to donate blood, because the need for blood never sees the chequered flag" said Fabian Coulthard from Bundaberg Red Racing

Bruce Muller, Townsville Blood Service Community Relations Officer said that almost 27,000 donations are needed every week for people battling cancer, heart, stomach and bowel disease, accident or trauma or to address complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

"One hundred and eighty thousand red blooded V8 fans are invited to make a life-time of difference to those in need by being a champion and donating blood" Muller said.
