After seven seasons with the Garry Rogers Motorsport squad in the V8 Supercar Championship Series, the only Western Australian driver in the series found a new home at the HSV Dealer Team in 2005. The 1997 Australian Formula Ford Champion and 2000 Bathurst winner made the switch in an effort to reignite his career with a top team – a move that paid dividends with his first round victory in five years, at Symmons Plains, in 2005. He backed up with two round wins in 2006, at Queensland Raceway and Symmons Plains. Tander is now fully primed for another shot at the championship, which narrowly eluded his grasp in 2000, when he finished a narrow second to HRT’s Mark Skaife. One of the tallest drivers in the field, Tander is among the best in terms of sheer raw speed. He came to the GRM squad in 1998 as a talent direct from Formula Ford – a rare jump in motor sport – but honed his race craft to the highest level. Paired with Jason Bargwanna, the two built the small Melbourne-based team into a major player in V8 Supercar racing, winning its ultimate prize – Bathurst – in 2000. But pickings became lean in over the next four seasons as GRM struggled to match the leading teams, and Tander decided to seek greener pastures with HSV Dealer Team for 2005 and beyond. Tander returned to the winner’s podium in 2005, scoring his first round victory in five years at Symmons Plains. He followed up with a second place in the season finale at Phillip Island. In 2006, he hit the championship lead by mid season, but a run of unfortunate mechanical failures, at Oran Park, Sandown and Bathurst – the latter two with HRT – put paid to his chances. However, he still managed fourth place in the championship – his best finish since his near miss in 2000. He is one of the favourites for 2007, before a shot has been fired. In 2007, GT’s stars aligned and he finished the Phillip Island Grand Finale ahead of Ford’s Jamie Whincup – doing enough to be crowned V8 Supercar Champion by just one solitary point! He had a stunning season, which included clean sweeps of his home event in Perth and Round 7 at the Ipswich Raceway in Queensland. The Holden Racing Team pulled off a pre-season coup by signing Garth in 2008 to race for the factory team with Mark Skaife.
